The mystery of the missing "X-5". On 22nd September 1943, six X-Craft
midget submarines set off on a difficult and dangerous assignment. Their target
was the German battleship "Tirpitz", anchored in a Norwegian fjord; their
mission, to attach explosive mines to its hull and sink the ship. Three
submarines never reached the fjord, and "X-5", commanded by Lieutenant
Henty-Creer and his crew were never seen again. Neither he nor any of his crew
received any posthumous gallantry awards. Did "X5" actually penetrate the
anti-submarine defences around the "Tirpitz"? Investigative journalist Alf
Jacobsen argues that Henty-Creer and his crew deserve to be recognised for their
bravery in his riveting account.
