The Vosges Mountains Campaign, October 1944 to January 1945. October 1944: Allied forces are poised for the plunge into Germany. The Wehrmacht is reeling, but as the German Army's lines are broken, defences in the rugged Vosges Mountains of north-east France stiffen. Critics of American tactics and training have long maintained that the American soldier was no match for the German soldier. Keith Bonn refutes this claim and shows that the American GI was much more than a match for the vaunted German, even without the aid of air support and massed armour formations. Despite terrible climactic conditions, and fighting on terrain that clearly favoured the numerically superior defender, the US soldiers were able to overcome the enemy.
