Reinhard "Teddy" Suhren fired more successful torpedo shots than any other man during the war, many before he even became a U-boat commander - indeed, he was the first junior officer to be awarded the Knight's Cross for his achievements. Fondly remembered among U-boat veterans for his good humour and man-management skills, he was also irreverent and rebellious by nature, and frequently in trouble with higher authority. Despite his refusal to conform to Nazi doctrine, his operational successes allowed him to move in the highest circle of power in Germany, and allowed him unusual insight into its workings. His reminiscences were typically forthright and unconventional, but have remained untranslated until now. The work was undertaken by Frank James, whose interest in Suhren resulted from discovering the cache of Suhren's photographs which formed the basis of "U-Boat War Patrol".
