There are some names in the firearms world which will never be entirely forgotten. Among them are Maxim, Vickers, Hotchkiss and Nordenfelt. The latter invented a number of machine guns, many of which were issued to the Royal Navy, and this book looks at a number of his inventions, and compares them with their competitors. Needless to say the book is an unashamed sales brochure in truth, but the data given and the descriptions of the weapons makes for extremely interesting reading. The book examines the single- and multi-barrelled weapons, as well as the various calibres in which they were sold. Each weapon is shown mounted and ready for use, and naval carriages are also included in the many illustrations in the book. In all there are 57 full-page illustrations and diagrams, six of which show penetration comparisons between the Nordenfelt one inch and the Hotchkiss 37 mm. Other plates show the four-barrelled anti-torpedo boat gun, the five-barrelled infantry gun and the embrasure mounting for Nordenfelt guns, as well as many other interesting details. There are also 55 tables giving weights and dimensions, comparisons, and every other detail worth mentioning of both Nordenfelt guns and the competitors. The text includes advice on the use of the weapons in various tactical situations, both on land and afloat. Reprint of the 1882 original edition.
