The Landing Ship Tank is one of the most famous of the many World War II amphibious warfare ships. Capable of discharging its cargo directly on to shore and extracting itself, the LST provided the backbone of all Allied landings between 1943 and 1945, especially during D-Day and in the Pacific Theatre. The LST saw service from late 1942 until late 2002, when the last ship of its type in the US Navy, USS "Frederick" (LST-1184), was decommissioned. Small numbers of improved LSTs were built in the 1950s, and an entirely new class was built between 1969 and 1973. This book reveals how the LST exceeded its expectations of its creators and also fulfilled many unforeseen roles and missions. Contents: Design and development of the LST * Variants and users * Weapons and tactics * Operational history * Colour plates by Peter Sarson *
