In June 1940, after the fall of France, a small band of French soldiers refused to lay down their arms. The first military actions under independent Free French leadership took place in Central Africa, under the command of a totally unknown young officer, Philippe de Hautecloque, nicknamed "Leclerc" to prevent reprisals by the Germans on his family. With great fighting spirit, Column Leclerc waged war on the Italian part of Africa, and took part in the final collapse of the Axis forces in Tunisia in May 1943. French text.
