Excavations by Graham Webster, 1955-1985. The Roman legionary fortress at Wroxeter (Viroconium Cornoviorum) was built on a strategic crossing point on the River Severn. The site developed from a mid-1st Century auxiliary fort to a fortress for Legio XIV that was rebuilt for Legio XX and then downgraded to a depot and workshop by AD 90. The excavations produced extensive evidence for the method of survey and construction of the legionary timber defences, as well as considerable quantities of coins, metalwork, pottery and glass. Now out-of-print and limited stock available.
