Reprint of John Hewitt's standard work on the subject of ancient and medieval armour of the northern European nations; available as a set of three volumes, first published in 1855. Volume 1 covers the iron period to the end of the 13th Century; Volume 2 covers the 14th Century; Volume 3 (the Supplement) covers the 15th, 16th and 17th Centuries. This treasure trove of information has scores of illustrative plates, printed in fine detail. The author looks first at spears and spearheads. Swords, daggers and the many other different forms of the blade are examined next, as are axe heads. Defence against these weapons was provided by armour, and the author shows how shields were designed and their use. He also looks at how archers, pike- and axe-men and knights were armed and armoured. The book is an essential reading and reference work to any general student of medieval warfare, as well as to the more specialised researcher. It is invaluable and enjoyable.
