AUTHOR: Smith, R FORMAT: 192pp 30 Bw 234x156 Hb Second part of a fascinating study of an airfield - its pilots, groundcrews and staff, starts just after the Battle of Britain when Hornchurch was taking the fight to the enemy with the Sweeps and Circuses of 1941. By 1942, the Dieppe operation, saw pilots from France, Belgium, New Zealand and Czechoslovakia flying from here with characters such as Harry Broadhurst, Paddy Finucane, Duncan Smith and Max Bygraves. Post war it served as a Air Crew Selection Centre from 1948 to 1956, with many thousands of hopefuls passing through.
