The historic events of June to August 1944 from the German Army's viewpoint. While the Germans knew an invasion was inevitable, no one knew where or when it would fall. After the initial assaults of June established an Allied bridgehead, a state of stalemate prevailed. The Germans fought with great courage hindered by lack of supplies and overwhelming Allied control of the air. When the Allies finally broke out the collapse was catastrophic, with the Falaise Gap becoming a graveyard of German men and equipment. Richard Hargreaves gives great insights into the strategic and tactical problems faced by the Germans in attempting to prevent and then contain the Allied invasion.
