A superb memoir by a German soldier who fought in Poland, France, Russia and North-west Europe. Georg Grossjohann enlisted in the Reichswehr as a soldier bound for twelve years' service to the Weimar Republic. His World War II service began as an NCO in the Polish campaign and ended as a regimental commander. During this time he earned, among other decorations, the Iron Cross for bravery on the battlefield. "Five Years, Four Fronts" describes not only Grossjohann's combat experiences, but also his day-to-day routine in the German army. He takes the reader from Poland to the Maginot Line, Russia and his eventual capture by the Americans in 1945. Remarkably, it is utterly devoid of self-serving, selective amnesia or embellishments.
