US armoured units took part in all the major campaigns in the battles for France US tank operations in France involved two types of formations. The armoured divisions were intended primarily for mobile operations, and their principal role was to exploit deep behind enemy lines once a penetration had been won by the infantry. Of the sixteen armoured divisions raised in World War II, all but one served in the European Theater of Operations. The separate tank battalions were formed to provide support to the infantry. In France, most infantry divisions had a tank battalion and a tank destroyer temporarily attached to them for the conduct of specific operations. This book is a companion volume to "US Tank Battles in Germany 1944-1945", also authored by Steven Zaloga. Most photographs are from US Army Signal Corps, sharp and clear. Besides US tanks like Sherman and its many variants, M10, M36, there are also photographs of knocked out Panther, PzKpfw IV, Hanomag, Flak 38 (t), Hetzer, Wirbelwind, and a rare SdKfz 251/21.
