Michelin guide to the’ miracle of the Marne’ the far-flung battlefield east of Paris where the German advance in September 1914 was checked and hurled back. This book begins with a thirteen page account of the Battle of the Marne which it advises the tourist to read before going on to the descriptive part, so that he or she has an understanding of the action as a whole; the operations described here lasted from 6 to 13 September 1914. This account is supported with maps and photographs of commanders on both sides. Then follows the tourist section in which the battlefields are divided into three sub-divisions which correspond to the three main sectors of the battle: The Ourcq (with visits to Chantilly, Senlis and Meaux); the Marshes of St Gond (with visits to Coulommiers, Provins and Sezanne); and the Revigny Pass (with visits to Chalons sur Marne, Vitry le Francois and Bar le Duc). Descriptions provide something of the history of the towns and places of interest, with pre-war and wartime photographs, as well as a guide to the battlefields in the area. Reprint of the 1919 original edition.
