The Soviet Union's answer to the Lockheed Starlifter first flew in 1971 and has since become a familiar sight both in the military situations for which it was intended, and as a commercial freighter world-wide. It has also been developed as the IL-78 for aerial refuelling, and in AEW and other versions, all of which are included in this Aerofax. Compiled by noted Russian aviation writers and historians from a wealth of first-hand Russian sources, there is not only a full development history and technical description, but a comprehensive history of every evolution of the design and its service. There are truly extensive tables detailing each aircraft built, with c/n, serial and so on, and detailed notes on every operator, both civil and military, and their fleets. The extensive Aerofax-style photograph coverage, mostly in colour and again from Russian sources, fully illustrates the history of the aircraft and the liveries of its many operators world-wide, plus of course detailed photography of special appeal to the modeller.
