Vasily Grossman with the Red Army, 1941-1945. "A Writer at War" is a classic eye-witness account of the brutal warfare on the Eastern Front. It is based on the notebooks of Grossman, whose "Life and Fate" many regard as the 20th Century's greatest Russian novel. The first-ever English translation of this definitive chronicle is translated and edited by acclaimed historian Antony Beevor. Deemed unfit for service when the Germans invaded in 1941, Grossman became a special correspondent for "Red Star", the Red Army newspaper. He spent three years at the front, observing the pitiless fighting ever known. Grossman witnessed the retreats of 1941, the defence of Moscow, the Siege of Stalingrad and fighting in Ukraine. He was present at the Battle of Kursk and, as the Red Army advanced, he reached Berdichev to find his mother and other relatives killed. Grossman's astonishing narrative is perhaps the best description ever of what he himself called "the ruthless truth of war".
